Istana Bung Hatta

Bung Hatta Palace is known as the Tri Raga State Building. The location of the Bung Hatta Palace is in the center of Bukittinggi city, precisely in front of the Jam Gadang park.

The building which has become a Cultural Heritage is characterized by colonial architectural styles, but the roof of the building is made of shingles. The room in this palace consists of a garden in the courtyard, main room, living room, meeting room, and spacious rooms totaling 8, but there are additions so that the rooms number 12. On the front yard there is a corridor supported by pillars cylindrical pillars. Inside the building complex there are two Bung Hatta statues each located on the front of the building (half body statue) and on the side of the building (whole body statue) which measures 2 meters high.

The area of ​​the Bung Hatta Palace is 12,425 m² and the area of ​​the main building is 3,672 m². This palace has a simple interior, far from being magnificent. This reflects the character of Bung Hatta who is a simple and unpretentious figure. Inside this building there are many photographs that tell the story of Bung Hatta's life, starting from childhood until Bung Hatta became the first Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.

During the Japanese colonial era, this building was used as the residence of the Japanese Defense Commander. In 1946, this building was the palace of the first Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, namely Drs. Mohammad Hatta. Whereas in 1947, this building was used as the Center for Emergency Administration of the Republic of Indonesia.


During the Dutch colonial period, the Bung Hatta Palace was used as the office of the Resident of Padangse Bovenlanden and the Assistant Resident of Agam. Then during the Japanese occupation functioned as the home of the Japanese Defense Commander (Seiko Seikikan Kakka). Then after Indonesian independence, this building was known as the Great Guest House and was used as a residence and office of Bung Hatta's vice president while serving in Bukittinggi in 1947-1948.

After splitting Central Sumatra Province into three regions in 1958, the first Governor of West Sumatra Kaharudin Datuk Rangkayo Basa built a new building which until now was called the Tri Arga State Building in 1961. The condition of the Bung Hatta Palace Cultural Heritage Site was relatively good and well maintained. Currently the building is used as a place for seminars, workshops, and representative national and regional level meetings as well as a state guest house when visiting Bukittinggi.

The building layout of this building has also changed a lot. This building has the characteristics of colonial architecture with spacious rooms totaling eight units, and currently has been added to become 12 units. The roof of the building is made of shingles. Meanwhile, on the front page, there is a corridor supported by round pillars.

The Bung Hatta Palace was first rehabilitated in 1961. Around the 1980s there was a ceiling replacement. The inner room, which originally had an open part that functioned as a park, was then closed by making a joglo-shaped roof. While the park located underneath no longer exists because it is integrated with the floors of other rooms.

For those of you tourists who love historical tourism and want to visit, and see firsthand the shape of the outside buildings and the contents inside, it's very easy. Because the location of the Bung Hatta Palace is right in front of the Clock Tower area.
