In the house on Jalan Soekarno Hatta No. 37 Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, this was Muhammad Hatta born. Bung Hatta, as the Proclamator figure is usually called, was born in this wooden house.

Now the house is turned into a museum.

The house, which was built around the 1860s and uses wooden structures, consists of a main building, pavilion, rice barn, kitchen and stables and a fish pond. The main building serves to receive guests, the family dining room, and the room of Bung Hatta's mother, uncle and grandfather, while the pavilion functions as Bung Hatta's bedroom.

The house is made of wood, two floors. Not too large in size. The only item that reflects if the Bung Hatta family used to be a respected family was the bugi carriage.

Single room, aka Bung Hatta's room as a child also looks very simple, there are only beds, desks, and bookshelves. Bung Hatta was known to be very fond of reading, even since he was a child.

The original house where Bung Hatta was born had collapsed in the 1960s.

Based on the ideas of the Chairman of the Bung Hatta Education Foundation, the house was rebuilt as an effort to remember and obtain a picture of the proclamator's childhood in the city of Bukittinggi. The rebuilding research began in November 1994 and began on January 15, 1995. This house was inaugurated on August 12, 1995, to coincide with Bung Hatta's birthday as well as to celebrate 50 years of Indonesian Independence.

This house was built following its original form which can be seen in the Bung Hatta memoir and various photos or documentation belonging to the Bung Hatta family. Most of the furniture in the house is still original from the childhood heritage of Bung Hatta obtained from his family and relatives, as well as the layout of the furniture is still maintained in its original place.

Bung Hatta was born on 12 August 1902 to the couple H. Muhammad Djamil and Saleha and was the second descendant of Syech Adurrachman, also known as Syech Batuhampar. Bung Hatta lived in this house from 1902-1913, a time that was relatively short but gave deep memories and great influence in shaping his character. The work discipline, timeliness, simplicity and affection he saw and the example of his grandfather, H. Angah or Mr. Gaek, started from this house. Pak Gaek, who is a private post contractor, works with precision, discipline, good organization, and on time in preparing all shipping needs, giving an impression that is left in Bung Hatta's mind.

Bung Hatta studied his elementary school at the Europese Lageree School (ELS) Bukittinggi, continued on to Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (MULO), Padang 1 Middle School, and Prins Hendrik School (PHS) in Batavia. He continued his education at the Handels Hooge School-trade school in Rotterdam, the Netherlands from 1921-1932.

Bung Hatta has been known as an activist and fighter since his school days, where he and his friends founded Jong Sumateranen Bond both in Padang and Batavia, the Indonesian Association in the Netherlands, and Indonesian National Education (PNI Baru). He went through exile in Digul, Bandaneira and Bangka.

Bung Hatta became the proclaimer of Indonesian independence with Sukarno, both of whom became the president and vice president of the Republic of Indonesia during the Linggadjati, Renville, Roem-Royen negotiations and finally Bung Hatta represented RI in the Round Table Conference (KMB) in The Netherlands in the Netherlands where finally the Netherlands recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia as an independent and sovereign country.
